Belgium: Brussels

We had a quick stopover in Brussels between Ghent and Paris, so we decided to head straight to a waffle place recommended by our friends Toby and Sarah which definitely lived up to expectations. We both preferred the Liege type (bottom) to the Brussels version (top).

The main square is typically Belgian with the same sort of architecture we had seen in Antwerp and Ghent over the last few days. Somehow a cat appeared out of nowhere in the middle of the square and Kate gave him a pat.

Finally some decent weather

For lunch we had one of Kate's new favourite foods, a brie and honey sandwich from a local chain shop. They seemed to have an outlet at every train station so we got through quite a few of them. After some more wandering we stumbled upon the "Mannekin Pis" which is a small statue of a child pissing. The locals dress him up in fancy costumes during the year and today he was wearing this....
Mannekin Pis

Brussels definitely had more of a "big city" feel than the rest of Belgium and was probably our least favourite of the bunch.

Belgium is split between Flemish (Dutch) and French speakers and Brussels is the first majority French speaking part we had been to. Busting out a bit of French here and there gave us a bit of practice for Paris coming up.

Eventually we made our way to the bus stop to catch our bus to Paris which cost a paltry 9 Euros.
