After an unholy 4am wake up, we dragged ourselves to the airport for our early morning Flight to Warsaw. After so many Ryanair flights from Munich (very) West Airport it was a treat to fly with Lufthansa from the main Munich Airport which is much closer. These intra-EU flights are great with no immigration controls at either end, so getting through the airports is much easier than usual.
The first thing you see when you come out of Warsaw train station is the enormous "Palace of Culture" which was a "gift" from the Soviet Union built in typical Stalinist architecture style. Apparently it's not very popular with the locals as it is a constant reminder of the USSR's dominance over Poland in the communist era.
It was some sort of national holiday so there was Polish flags up everywhere and people were in a celebratory mood.
We ducked into a restaurant for lunch to escape the rain and ordered a few Polish specialties, potato pancakes with mushrooms and pierogi dumplings. Kate had a not so traditional sangria which bore no resemblance to a Spanish sangria but was refreshing none the less.
Hotels seem to be ridiculously cheap in Poland so we had a great view from our modestly priced room overlooking the Palace of Culture.

The centre of the old town was almost completely destroyed in the war, but has been rebuilt to its former glory. There is a huge contrast between the buildings in the old town, and the communist era apartment blocks which surround it.
We had a great time in Warsaw which surprised us with its wide variety of architectural styles, and interesting mix of neighbourhoods.
